"The Reality Dysfunction" by Peter F Hamilton
I have been tearing through that sci-fi book faster than I ever imagined I would considering the rocky beginning. Once I started ignoring the technology passages the story was fascinating. He uses multiple points of view which is distracting to some, but I had no problem keeping everyone straight. The story is six books, each one over 500 pages so I am anticipating a nice long time before I have to worry about what to read next. Actually, I am trying to slow down. I have started to dream about the characters. Sometimes their stories intrude on my brain while I am supposed to be working and I have to bring myself back to reality. It is my own Reality Dysfunction.

That sounds like a a real treat of a book. What a lovely surprise after the uncertain beginning.
ReplyDeleteI love full immersion experiences!
ReplyDeleteIt's my favorite way of experiencing stories.
And long series are exceptionally good for that.
Alesa, sometimes I will pick up a book just because it is long. When I first saw Book 4 of Harry Potter I was so excited that it would last longer than one day. Unfortunately, I stayed up all night long reading so I still finished it way too fast.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you liked this book! And I hope you WILL try NaNoWriMo!! (referring to your comment on my blog)
ReplyDeleteOh that is so great that the book has set your imagination on fire!
ReplyDeleteBrilliant! It's such a shame about the beginning but we will just move on now and carry on!
Six books over 500 pages - good grief!! But at least now you know what to expect.
Brilliant stuff and thanks for the write up and info on this novel.
Take care

Karen, I have seven months to psych myself up for it. Maybe I will get inspiration in Costa Rica.
ReplyDeleteKitty, I really wanted to like it. Otherwise all those books would have gone to waste.
ReplyDeleteI see from another blog you've been reading YA lately (my favorite genre, next to memoir). This tweaked my interest that was also tweaked when I found you on Karen G's blog. I'm a writer who will also soon be published through WiDo Publishing. Karen says you like to follow writers, so I hope you'll look me up. You have such a lively blog, I'm glad I found you.
ReplyDeleteBack in uni when I had no responsibilities (social, personal, or academic), I spent weeks doing nothing but reading through Lovecraft and Phillip K. Dick complete works omnibuses... only stopping to sleep and to go out training or shopping (eating and bathing done book in hand). Good times!
ReplyDeleteHave you read Musashi by Eiji Yoshikawa? I think it's somewhere around 1000 pages... it's great fun to read. It's kinda like the Japanese book that holds the same place as the three musketeers.
When you are dreaming about the characters it's proof that you are enjoying the book(s):-) I like the term "reality dysfunction"
ReplyDeleteAnn, I have noticed your comments on KarenG's Quiet Blog but never clicked over. I am glad you visited and I will run right over and check out your blog.
ReplyDeleteAlesa, I have been too chicken to try a Japanese book because I am scared of the characters names. After conquering this story I feel ready for the challenge. 1000 pages, here we come!
Velva, that's the truth...but still weird:-)
